2010 Season- News

All change at the top of the table this week as Liam Kennedy’s team stuck five goals past Balfe’s boys in the top-of-the-table clash. With their leader in Munich, Niall’s team never got going and their points difference of +29 was also wiped out in a bad day all round. Liam Kennedy was on hand to actively manage his team and some shrewd changes at key points ensured the victory- that said, Niall’s lads will be rueing some wasteful finishing this evening.

Anna Ronngard has dug out a gem in Jenny from Södertorns Hägskola, with the newly-landed Irish girl bagging a goal and a handful of points on her debut. Mikaela, Maria and the rest of the Lillywhites were not short of chances but their touch in front of goal deserted them when they needed it most. With Swedes still in the majority, the female Gaels are really starting to look the part, and the whole club is looking forward to their first serious competitive outing.

The day was rounded off by the competition’s first inter-pub derby and having been robbed of victory in the Sponsor’s Match earlier this year, the Liffey extracted their revenge to beat the Dubliner by 14 points. Again, the goals won the game with the Liffey netting six and missing a penalty on their way to victory. That penalty miss will be nothing compared to the hangover the Dubs will face tomorrow, as they missed the chance to make up ground at the top of the table. The Liffey finally delivered on the promise of previous weeks, breaking quickly in the second half to put the game away.

We’re at the half-way stage in the tournament, and it’s still all to play for- despite some goalfests and superb points, and some fantastic individual performances by players old and new, no team has managed to make a break at the top. Next week sees a repeat of the games from Week One and the first chance to avenge previous defeats, and throw-in once again is at 1300 at Östermalms IP.

Be part of it.

The Ambassador Cup is a new tournament designed to give everyone a chance to play gaelic football- whatever your level of skill or fitness. We will blend everyone, from experienced players to total newcomers, to create four teams who will battle it out for the trophy over six weeks, with the winners receiving their prizes from the Ambassador himself.

Open training sessions will be organized just before the tournament starts, so regardless of whether you need to learn the rules or just brush up on your skills, sign up now and we’ll get you in shape! Just send an e-mail to stockholmgaa@gmail.com and we’ll do the rest.

The games will be played every Sunday from Aug 29 to Oct 3 between 1300 and 1400 at Östermalms IP, with family activities every week- make sure to bring the kids as we want to get the next generation of Gaels on board!

When: Every Sunday from 1300- 1400, starting August 29.

Where: Östermalms IP (nearest t-bana: Stadion)

Format: 7-a-side, free subsitutions, 2 x 14 minutes.

Who: EVERYBODY!!!!

The Ambassador Cup is  new, short-sided league competition that will begin at the end of August. We aim to have four mens teams (seven-a-side) and three ladies teams (five- or six-a-side) that will battle it out over a six-week program of league games, and the winners will receive their trophy from Ireland’s Ambassador to Sweden, Mr. Donal Hammill.

The games will take place on Sundays at Östermalms IP and we hope to see as many friends and family as possible at these games!

The committee has appointed team managers and coaches, and each team will be allotted some of the club’s senior players (many with championship experience) to ensure that the league is fair and competitive. To take part, please send an e-mail to stockholmgaa@gmail.com. More details will be posted in the forum in due course.
